Speaking the Truth in Love

Steve McClelen

Steve McClelen was appointed to the eldership in 2010. Tom McClelen, Steve’s father, served our country in the Air Force for 26 years. He and his wife, Shirley, were living in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, when their son Steve was born. Because of the family’s military service, Steve’s childhood years were spent in several places—Denver, Colorado; Fairbanks, Alaska; and North Highlands, California (a Sacramento suburb). When Tom retired from the Air Force, he moved his family to Stephenville, Texas, where Steve graduated from high school.

Steve met Janet Harris at Abilene Christian University in 1978. Jesse and Eva Nelle Harris, Janet’s parents, are longtime members of the Seagoville congregation. In fact, Jesse served the church as an elder for 46 years. In 1980, Steve and Janet married in the Seagoville church building. They have two children, Jennifer and Jeff, and three grandchildren, Ryder, Stephanie and Maddox.

In 2001, Steve became a math instructor at North Mesquite High School in Mesquite. For 20 years, he taught advanced courses in Calculus, Statistics, and College Algebra. He is now retired, and works with the website, as well as being the Office Manager at the church. His extracurricular interests include following his favorite professional sports teams (Rangers baseball, Mavericks basketball, and Cowboys football), golfing, and bowling. But his favorite recreational activity is spending time with Janet—doing brain puzzles together or watching shows.

Steve has a special love for music. In high school he excelled as a tuba and sousaphone player. In 1993, he became one of the original members of His Harmony, a popular a cappella group that performs Southern Gospel music. Steve’s musical talents are put to good use every Sunday morning as he directs the Seagoville church’s singing.
