The Sunday evening message (“Are Christians Hateful?”) introduced a six-part series answering questions asked by teenagers hostile to Christian faith. As noted, American teens confuse opposition to homosexuality with hatred. But refusing to wave the rainbow flag isn’t hateful. Homosexual behavior puts people at higher risk for depression, anxiety, domestic violence, and terminal illness. Worst of all, it leads to eternal death. The Bible says, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-10).
But how could God eternally punish someone for his homosexuality? Homosexuals and lesbians are “born that way.” Homosexuality is genetic. Condemning homosexual relationships is just like discriminating against females or people with dark skin. They can’t help it.
This is mere propaganda. Identical twins have the same genetic code. They share the same prenatal environment. But identical twins don’t necessarily have the same sexual preferences. If homosexuality were genetic, then all sets of identical twins would be either heterosexual or homosexual. Period. No exceptions. And what about bisexuals and transgender people? Are their preferences genetic too?
We can identify a person’s skin color or gender by looking at him or her. But recognition of sexual orientation depends exclusively on behavior. And behavior is something we can control. If there’s really a homosexuality gene, then maybe there’s a rape gene or a pedophilia gene too. But don’t we expect the rapist or the pedophile to control his harmful desires and leave innocent people alone?
